Everybody says that the world is becoming smaller. But there are more sites declared World Heritage by UNESCO each year. The more we know, the smaller seems to be our knowledgment... The four hydraulic boat-lifts on this short stretch of the historic Canal du Centre are industrial monuments of the highest quality. Together with the canal itself and its associated structures, they constitute a remarkably well-preserved and complete example of a late-19th-century industrial landscape.

This historical building, formerly a working press from XVI century, house the two oldest surviving printing presses in the world. The typographical collection and the old library are also remarkable.

Rouen cathedral is the main gothic building in a city with several gothic masterpieces, both civil and religious. This façade was painted several times from the same point of view at different times of the day and at different weather circumstances by Claude Monet.

Le Havre, the city rebuilt by Auguste Perret

St. Joseph's Church
St. Joseph´s church is perhaps the most impressive work of Auguste Perret, the architect who designed the reconstruction of Le Havre. This key port was bombed more than one hundred times and lost most of its housing during World War Two. The symmetrical building is organized around a central tower 106 meters high.

Old Town of Segovia and its Aqueduct (Spain)

San Esteban and the Cathedral from El Parral monastery.
San Esteban´s (s.XIII) is the highest Spanish romanesque tower, with 53 meters. It is known as "The Queen of Byzantine towers". The cathedral is the latest gothic one in Spain, and its slenderness has granted the title of "Lady of the Cathedrals". The image is taken from the quiet outer cloister of El Parral monastery, the head of Hieronymites. One of Sevovia´s best skyline viewpoint, and also one of the most recondite.

Monuments of Oviedo and the Kingdom of the Asturias (Spain)

Built from 842 to 850 by the king Ramiro I of Asturias, is a masterpiece of pre-romanesque art. It was orif¡ginally built as a palace for the incipient dinasty of an incipient christian spanish kingdom, so the real church of the complex was the near San Miguel de Lillo.

Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) (Japan)

Kinkakuji temple (Golden pavilion) in Kyoto
Built in 1397 as part of a new residence for the retired shogun Yoshimitsu. It was converted in a Zen temple after his dead. The present building dates from 1955. The former one was burnt by a fanatic monk in 1950. Its function is housing Buddha relics, so it is called "shariden".

Roman theatre: proscenium and scene façade
Emerita Augusta was a main city in Roman Hispania. The great theatre, with seats for 6.000 people was built on 16-15 BC, very close to city foundation. It was paid by Marco Agripa, son-in-law of emperor Augusto. Altough the wood of the proscenium and the statues in the front of the scene are gone, the summer classical theatre festival relives the past splendor.

Shrines and Temples of Nikko (Japan)

Rinzo, Toshogu Shrine
It is double layered roof, and building is 12 square meters. Buddhist sutra has been stored in the Rinzo. 1456 copies of 6325 volumes are put in the octagonal revolving shelf. The complex of Toshogu was a memorial for Ieyasu Tokugawa (xXVI), the founder of the powerful Tokugawa shogun dinasty.

Todaiji temple was conceived as the ruler of Buddhism in Japan. It´s name means Great Eastern Temple, and it is world's largest wooden building. It also houses Japan's largest Buddha statue, called Daibutsu. It was constructed in 752, when Nara was Japan´s capital.

University and Historic Precinct of Alcalá de Henares (Spain)

Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón designed this building after the huge projects for Salamnaca and Segovia cathedrals. Built from 1537 to 1543 and ordered by cardinal Tavera, it reflects the architectural way of showing Hispanic Monarchy imperial glory. Great teachers like Nebrija dictated their lessons and finally, when the pupil could reach the title, he came out form this building surrounded by the entire city, waiting for the party he was obliged to cost. This college has been the center of Alcala University activity for centuries, housing Cisneros remains, the university founder. It is also the setting for Cervantes price yearly ceremony.

Pilgrimage Church of St John of Nepomuk at Zelená Hora (Czech Republic)

Church of St John of Nepomuk
Baroque Gothic, an original architectonic style, is presented at this funeral church of St. John from Nepomuk in Zelená Hora. It was built at the end of sXVIII, according to the plans of Jan Blažej Santini. The style was born in Bohemia seventy years before as a result of modification of gothic elements to a purely Baroque style. The plan is a shape of five pointed star, and lies surrounded by a quiet graveyard.

Château of Chambord, yard and spiral staircase
Built for the king François I in sXVI, this hunting castle is a masterpice of French Renaissance style. The yard has staircases in each corner, making movility easier. But the most famous staircase is the interior one, formed by a double helix, allowing up and down independent flows. The presence of Leonrado da Vinci for several years at the near court of the king is supposed to be the inspiration for this work.

Mudejar Architecture of Aragon (Spain)

San Martin Mudejar tower, Teruel
Built in 1315, it is composed by two towers, one inside the other. In the space between them, the staircase to the belfry is placed. Mudejar comes from arab mudawwan, and means "who was allowed to stay". The muslims who reamined in the christian zoneof Spain contributed with their constructive knowledge to the gothic forms.
