San Ildefonso college, façade
Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón designed this building after the huge projects for Salamnaca and Segovia cathedrals. Built from 1537 to 1543 and ordered by cardinal Tavera, it reflects the architectural way of showing Hispanic Monarchy imperial glory. Great teachers like Nebrija dictated their lessons and finally, when the pupil could reach the title, he came out form this building surrounded by the entire city, waiting for the party he was obliged to cost. This college has been the center of Alcala University activity for centuries, housing Cisneros remains, the university founder. It is also the setting for Cervantes price yearly ceremony.
