Kinkakuji temple (Golden pavilion) in Kyoto
Built in 1397 as part of a new residence for the retired shogun Yoshimitsu. It was converted in a Zen temple after his dead. The present building dates from 1955. The former one was burnt by a fanatic monk in 1950. Its function is housing Buddha relics, so it is called "shariden".
